The Old Ways Weren't Working for Her
Traditionally, there have been three ways to help people who have a fear of flying.
Connie had tried them all.
One way to deal with flying phobia is anti-anxiety medication. The problem with prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal preparations is that they are only good for a certain number of hours so the anxiety can creep back in. They can also trigger allergic reactions. Plus, Connie found that anything she took left her feeling sluggish and not herself.
Okay. Pills were out.
Another common technique for dealing with a fear of flying is education (factual information about the safety of air travel), often augmented with de-sensitization through exposure... a fancy way of saying that the person with the fear uses flight simulators, virtual flight simulation or tales actual practice flights with a coach along for the ride.
But Connie wasn't comforted by facts and she didn't have the time or money to do flight simulations.
Okay. Education was out.
Another technique, and the one I knew best, was in-person therapy involving various psychological approaches, sometimes augmented with very specific drug therapies. I had seen therapy produce good results, but I also knew that it takes a significant amount of effort, discipline and practice (not to travel time to and from therapy sessions) in order to master the recommended techniques and apply them when you need them.
Okay. Therapy was out.
Necessity Was the Mother of This Invention
As a mental health professional, it hurt me to see a good friend in so much anguish. But what could I do? My friend lived far away from me and was unable to come for therapy sessions. And that got me to thinking...
"Did my friend need to be in my office to
benefit from the technique I was using with my patients?"
The answer came to me like a thunderbolt: "No! Take your office to your friend."
